🐻✡️ I visited the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum today. During the 1930s, Shanghai took in 20,000 Jewish European refugees, it’s a beautiful museum, the exhibits show the individual stories, and explained the global events that led up to it exhibits include family heirlooms (menorahs, matzah covers), how the refugees arrived, the organizations in Shanghai to help them settle (kitchen fund), how they started new lives (doctor offices, tailor shops, musicians), with weddings and bar mitzvahs, and recreation (the top soccer team!!) I was really moved by the personal stories, of how China’s ambassador to Vienna issued the visas, and how the Shanghai community welcomed the refugees, a lot of interviews with the refugees remembering their time in Shanghai Shanghai is very international, many expats and MNCs (multi-national corporations), welcoming and helpful
