Mobile uploads 🐻☀️ Cornell ILR Climate Jobs Institute releases a new report, on the NY solar industry, from the worker perspective! The solar industry is growing rapidly, it’s important that workers can make good wages, and that it grows in an equitable diverse way! A panel of solar workers shared their perspectives: - They have to chase solar projects because after a small town finishes a solar project, it’s unlikely they’ll have another one soon, so the solar worker has to move to other towns for new solar projects, one worker sold her house and travels around in a camper - It is hard to know about solar panel jobs, which makes it harder for diverse workers to learn about the jobs, because friends tell their friends about the jobs, and the public announcement of sites is during permitting rather than when they start hiring, it’s important the unions and recruiters try to add more diverse workforces - the employer trains you on the job, but the certifications are good for that one company, and it’s not accepted by other companies, so workers have to travel to new sites to do a "rodeo" to show they know what they’re doing on the job, it’s important to have a 3rd party certificate that is used across the employers - most jobs are usually 80% travelers, because people won’t quit jobs to work on a temporary solar job, and if area is economically depressed, most of the local workers have left, so it’s important travelers come to install it - solar panels installation pays well, gives a chance for the workers to make the middle class, and one has 3 young grandchildren, and hopes the climate is better for them when they grow up
