Mobile uploads 🐻🔬 Women in Biomedical Research!! Svetlana Mojsov won the Pearl Meister Prize, for her research on GLP-1, which is used in diabetes medicine to reduce blood glucose, and is also used by all the new weight loss drugs too! She grew up in Yugoslavia, came to Rockefeller University for her PhD, an expert at peptide synthesis, identified the 31 amino acids for GLP-1, and figured out how to synthesize it! Cornellian poet Diane Ackerman, MFA ’73, PhD ’79, gave the introductory remarks. Diane combines poetry and science, wrote the Zookeeper’s Wife and A Natural History of the Sciences. She shared the beauty in how whales remember their songs with rhymes, and how spring moves north 13 miles a day. The Pearl Meister Greengard Prize is awarded by Rockefeller University every year to female scientists (whose accomplishments aren’t recognized as much as men’s), 4 has gone on to win the Nobel Prize. Rockefeller is part of the Tri-Institutions, of Weill Cornell, Rockefeller University, and Memorial Sloan Kettering.
