Mobile uploads 🐻🏛️ Latino Day Hall Takeover, 30-year anniversary celebration!! In 1993, 200 students locked themselves in Day Hall for 4 days, to demand President Rhodes to make Cornell more welcoming for Latino students. From the protest, the Latino Studies major was created, with more Latino professors, and the Latino Living Center was created, where 50 Latino students live! Today, 20 participants came back to Cornell, to share their experience with current Latino students! They shared stories of the event, we did a reenactment of the protest, and it was really inspiring, to believe in the power to organize and affect change. I was impressed by the organizing ability (before the days of cell phones and email!!), they used rope and bucket to bring up food and blankets. It was relatable to hear how participants received books as well, to study for their exams during the protest! I was also impressed by the solidarity between the minorities, where the black students, especially from Ujamaa, helped the Latino students protest and organize! Back then only 15% of students were minorities, so it was important for minorities to stick together. Many of the protestors went into careers of organizing! One organizes people to vote in the elections, one became the first Latino mayor of Ithaca, one became director of the Cornell Workers Institute, one became the president of a university!! The Latino Cornell community is very vibrant today, there are 16 Latino-related clubs at Cornell, the Latino Living Center has wonderful community, with weekly events like Cafe con Leches, Day of the Dead parities, and more!
