🐻😀 Cornell First Gen Annual Lunch!! Cornell has the most first-gen students in the Ivy League! students and staff went around the room, to share their first-gen experiences, it is difficult to be a first-gen student, because their parents are unfamiliar with the college experience, and they don’t have the support networks and mentorship of other classmates
Cornell is doing a wonderful job supporting the first-gen students. There’s the Pre-Collegiate Summer Program, where students start Cornell early, to build community and head start on academics. There’s programs across the different majors (ie KKR Accelerator program for first-gen business students, CHAMPS summer research program for first-gen science students, and many more clubs and spaces where first-gen students can gather and find community). Many groups also offer mentoring services like PCCW has mentorship for first-gen students!!
I was impressed by the large number of community college transfers as well, ie the first-gen students went to community college for a few years, Cornell has channels with many local community colleges, and offer great support for the post-transfer experience!
