Mobile uploads 🐻🏀 Sports journalist Neil Best ’82 talked about his career, from the 1980s to today!! the newspaper industry and professional sports changed so much!! - the reporters and athletes used to have much closer relationships (for more inside scoops!!) but now with social media, the teams have more direct connections with fans, so the reporters don’t have as much access anymore (no more "locker room" access) - college sports have changed a lot, because of Name Image Likeness, players rotate to different schools each year, to whichever would pay the most, so the fan loyalty is not the same as before - there’s interesting similarities across the decades, when he first started in the 1980s, the older reporters all talked about the good old days of sports reporting, when the Chipmunks (a group of sports reporters) had so much more influence in the 1950s and 1960s. and today, now he’s the older reporter, he talks about the good old days too - he also gave good tactical advice about public relations! journalists all look for sources who are Quotable and Accessible!! so if you’re looking for more media exposure, figure out what topics journalists care about, be very accessible to the journalists, and make quotable quotes that deliver the story!! I took the train down the NJ coastline, to Holmdel, for the Cornell event!! it was at Bell Works, where Severance the TV show was filmed!! before the talk, we had a wonderful dinner (5/5) of pasta and cheese and blueberries!! Cornell Club of Monmouth and Ocean have the most wonderful events!! it’s a wonderful place to live, a ferry ride away from Manhattan, with great schools, and so much science and engineering!! (I love how Bell Works has a transistor at the front!!!) and there’s also the first antenna that "heard" the Big Bang!!
