🐻🔬 I visited the Cornell Synchrotron!! It’s the most amazing research tool, used by researchers from all around the world, for all kinds of research (biology, materials, chemistry, energy, aerospace, and more!!), resulting in multiple Nobel Prizes and new products that improve our lives everyday!!
it’s so impressive how the Synchrotron could be used in so many ways!! the positron beam goes around a large circle underneath the Cornell soccer fields, and there’s 8 experiment stations (hutches) that tap into this beam and use the high energy x-rays created from it, each for a different purpose, for example:
- one hutch is for structural biology, so researchers can see the 3-dimensional shape of proteins, and design drugs that can cure diseases
- one hutch is for high magnetic field, so researchers can see how materials react to high magnetic fields, and design materials for fusion energy reactors!
- one hutch is for material strain, so researchers can see how strain is applied throughout the material, and design airplane parts that last a long time under high strain!
I was also really impressed by the staff scientists and engineers who maintain and upgrade the Synchrotron, and help the researchers, government, and industry users plan their experiments and use the Synchrotron!! it’s a wonderful helpful community!!!
