🐻📈 Reframe 1-dimensional problems into multi-dimensional problems, which are easier to solve!! imagine being a football runningback:
- on a 1 dimension field, you’ll have to push through every defender 1 by 1 (almost impossible!! strength vs strength, and you get tired)
- when it’s 2 dimensions, then you can run around defenders (but still difficult, because the defenders can easily form a wall)
- when it’s 3 dimensions, you can whizz above or below them (quidditch style!!, so much easier)
- and when it’s 4 dimensions, you can whizz by the defenders before they even get on the field!! (the easiest!!)
When a Cornellian looks for a job, I recommend not to frame it as a 1-dimensional "job search problem" of Apply -> Interview -> Receive Offer. Instead, reframe it as a multi-dimensional "career management problem" where networking is a dimension, skills is a dimension, industry knowledge is a dimension, etc. This sets up for long-term success, because even if you go to a networking event and don’t get any referrals for a job, you still build up relationships helpful for the rest of your career. and Even if you learn a new skill and you aren’t asked about that skill during the interview process, you still know how to do a new skill helpful for the rest of your career.
When a Cornellian tries to get promoted within a large company, I recommend not to frame it as a 1-dimensional "career track" of Analyst -> Associate -> Sr Associate -> Manager -> Sr Manager -> Director -> Sr Director -> and so on. Instead, reframe it as solving a multi-dimensional "customer problem". For example, if you’re in a big pharma company looking for a cure for cancer, focus on improving on dimensions like knowledge about cancer, knowledge about clinical trials, knowledge about research techniques, network of researchers, network of oncology doctors, network of cancer patients, etc. this way, Even if you don’t get the promotion you deserve, you are still more effective at finding a cure and closer to helping the patients. and Even if the bureaucracy in the big pharma company stifles good ideas, i.e. a VP reorgs the division and you’re laid off, you can always start your own biotech startup, and find a cure yourself!!
