🐻🎉 Stop trying to impress people when networking. The quality of a relationship, isn’t how much better you are than the other person, but how close you are to that person. Instead, you should Listen to them, close the distance, and connect with them!!
Stop name-dropping the impressive people you know, Stop bragging about the impressive accomplishments you’ve accomplished, Stop showing off the impressive awards you’ve been awarded. That kind of behavior doesn’t lead to friendships! It doesn’t lead to closeness, it pulls people apart, it makes the other person defensive, feel the need to impress you back, and no friendship is formed.
Instead, Listen to the other person, empathize with them, reminisce on shared memories, make a bunch of mutual friends that hold the friendship together, and expect to see each other again and again at future events!! That brings people together, it forms a real friendship, a stronger and stronger network over time!!
Meeting Cornellians at the Food Court is the best way to make friends, because Cornellians don’t come to the Food Court to impress each other!! The only reason to come, is to make friends with each other. We all come with the same mission, we all have shared memories of Cornell, we all have mutual Cornellian friends, we all will see each again and again, over the decades!!
