π»ποΈ Iβm really worried about Cayuga Lake. Cargill has an old salt mine (built in 1910), that extends underneath Cayuga Lake. If the mine collapses, it can increase the salinity of Cayuga Lake, destroying the ecosystem. The mine has 10 years of mine-able salt left, but rather than closing it, Cargill is looking to sell the mine, distancing themselves from any potential environmental catastrophes connected with their mine.
It is really important, that a comprehensive independent environmental impact study is done, to make sure Cayuga Lake is safe. And it is really important that any future owner, can take full responsiblity for any environmental catastrophe, by posting a $10bn environmental bond.
