You tagged Alex Bores 🐻🚀 AI Regulation is the most important topic this election: AI is getting so powerful, it can be used for good or for evil, and we must have regulations that protect us from the evil, but not hold us back from all the good! Alex Bores ’13 is the only Congressional candidate in the nation, with anywhere near the technical depth necessary to regulate AI well. Alex has a masters in computer science, worked at a tech company, and has written the leading AI Regulation bill in NY State. that’s why the Big Tech companies (like OpenAI) fund a Super PAC that’s running $10 million of negative ads against him! Alex is an incredible engineer: when he lived on Roosevelt Island, he wrote the code, that created a data feed for the Roosevelt Island tram schedule, that Google Maps uses to show the tram as an option for getting to Roosevelt Island (and Cornell Tech!!) Alex can communicate technical concepts clearly: I attended one of his small library gatherings, and a constituent complained about delivery e-bikes causing accidents, driving the wrong direction on one-way streets, and Alex explained how the delivery apps track their couriers with GPS, and his constituents all understood why the algorithm created misaligned incentives for couriers, and what is possible to enforce with GPS and what isn’t Alex excels at the intersection of tech and policy: he wrote a bill to protect restaurant reservations from bots that book tables and resell those reservations. his bill required the restaurant’s approval for 3rd party reservation reselling, it’s a clever bill that both stops the bots and is easy to enforce. it is one thing to use AI, but it takes a deeper degree of understanding, to regulate it. it’s important our regulations are made by competent legislators who understand AI, who can communicate it to constituents, who can navigate the intersection of tech and policy! early voting is happening right now, find your early voting location in the comments below
